Pennant Race Gazette–June 23, 2011: An Oasis in a “Field of Screams”

Ahhh!  Pennant Race Baseball resumes, if only with the series between Philadelphia and St. Louis.  And can somebody please beat the Phillies!  I’m starting to think this might end up in a busted pennant race.  But it’s still early; and things have been known to happen.  Still, if it does become hairy, I have some thoughts on why a “true” pennant race season would turn out better (remember these guys still have 4 rather than 2 post-season slots to shoot for.  Big difference!):

  • I think someone in the NL East would have picked up Roy Oswalt last year, maybe Atlanta.  Teams need to think longterm and not let opponents get too far ahead of them.
  • I’ m always suspicious of the Florida Marlins.  They’re one of those teams that is always tearing down and then rebuilding their team. Pennant Race Baseball means  that if a team tries this strategy, they will take longer to get back to  the postseason Whenever I see a team get too far ahead in the NL East, I always think of this.
  • With 2 rather than 4 playoff chances, teams are going to do more tinkering with their roster; maybe make a minor deal or two to fill holes.  What intrigues me the most, is the possibility that a team would promote a young star from the minors a year or two earlier.  Statistics show that teams are waiting longer to bring up players these days.  This probably has something to do with having them longer at their “peak” before free agency comes along.  Having pennant races might entice teams to bring up players sooner, without hurting their development.
  • This will also apply to teams that are trying for the 1st Tier.  They will adjust their rosters and give teams in the race a harder time.

Well, we’ll still give you the whole picture below.  Enjoy!
